How do we keep Jesus at the heart of Christmas?

I was recently sharing My Advent Angel with a Coordinator of Parish ​Catechesis, who noted it’s easy to say, “Jesus is the reason for the season,” but harder to live it.

SANTA IN THE SPOTLIGHT?

I couldn't agree with him more. While Santa (inspired by the real St. Nicholas) is beloved, his secular image often overshadows Baby Jesus: on Coke cans, in commercials, in malls. Many people who are not practicing our faith still happily honor Santa and have big Christmas parties—without remembering who the season is really for. 

It feels like Santa can steal the spotlight from Baby Jesus, making Advent and Christmas Santa-centric, even when we don't want them to be. My Advent Angel shifts the focus back to the Nativity, letting families enjoy Santa without losing the true meaning of Christmas.

A DECLINE IN FAITH

Baby Jesus getting forgotten reflects a bigger reality. It reveals a decline in faith. Those who identify as Christians has fallen from 90% in 1972 to 64% in 2020 (Pew Research), and is projected to drop further still. How can we come back? A first step could be recognizing that intentional traditions of faith matter.
